Albufeira, Algarve
Parking in Albufeira.
Every guide to this covers the same car parks in the town. Almost nobody covers the coves — and the coves are where the question actually bites, because out there the car park is small, it is usually free, and whether you get into it decides your morning.
This page is about the beach car parks west and east of town: which are free, how big they really are, and what time in summer you have already missed them. The town car parks are covered well enough elsewhere and there is nothing useful I can add to them.
Written by Tiago, who drives past these every day and has an obvious interest in you not driving at all. So here is the part that costs me money: some of Albufeira's beaches need no car park, because you can walk to them. That section is directly below the table.
The cove car parks
Free means free as far as I have checked. Where I have not established it the row says so rather than guessing — this site has been wrong about cove parking once already, and it is not worth being wrong about twice.
| Where | Free | What is actually there |
|---|---|---|
| Praia do Castelo | Yes | A small free car park on the cliff, about fifty metres from the beach entrance, off the M526. It is a handful of spaces and in summer it is gone by mid-morning — which is exactly why the beach stays quiet. |
| Praia dos Arrifes | Not checked | An unpaved clearing in the pine woods above the cliff, room for roughly a dozen cars. In August it is gone by ten in the morning. |
| Praia de São Rafael | Yes | A car park on the cliff above, plus free roadside spaces along the approach. It is the biggest of the three and still goes early in July and August. |
| Olhos de Água | Yes | A paid garage a short walk from the front, and free spaces further up the hill — which means a walk back up at the end of the day, carrying whatever you carried down. The free ones go early in summer. |
| Castelo de Paderne | Yes | Free, and that is unusual enough to say twice. There is a car park at the castle end of the track and another down in Paderne village. The last two kilometres are unsurfaced — graded and easy after the council has been round, rutted and slow after heavy rain. |
| Alte | Yes | Free in the village and generally easy, which is not true of anywhere on the coast. There is more space near Fonte Pequena. For the waterfall, people park by the cemetery and walk down. |
The ones you should not drive to
Some of Albufeira's beaches are in the old town rather than near it — a few minutes on foot from the square, through the tunnel, down the cliff lift, or on the escalator from Pau da Bandeira. Driving to one of them means parking somewhere in town and then walking further than you would have walked in the first place.
That is the only piece of parking advice on this page that costs nothing and saves the most: for the town beaches, don't.
- Praia do Peneco — 2 min
- Praia dos Pescadores — 3 min
What happens when it is full
There is no overflow. The road into a cove is narrow, there is nowhere to leave a car once the clearing is taken, and the next sensible space is a long way back towards town.
That is also why these beaches stay quiet in August while the town beaches do not. The car park is the crowd control, and the times in the table above are the whole story — if you are driving yourself in July or August, the honest advice is to be there before the number in your row.
When the car park is the problem
If you are reading this at nine in the morning wondering whether to risk it, the answer is usually yes — go now. If you are reading it at eleven in August, the one you want is already full and the drive out there will be wasted.
That is the gap a tuk tuk fills, and it is the only pitch on this page: picked up at your door, dropped at the top of the steps, and no car park to find at either end. The three western coves on one run.
The questions people actually ask
Is parking free at Albufeira's beaches?
At the coves, mostly yes. Praia do Castelo, Praia de São Rafael, Olhos de Água, Castelo de Paderne and Alte all have free parking, as far as I have checked. Where a row on this page says "not checked", nobody has established it and I would rather say so than guess.
