Castelo de Paderne
A Moorish castle on a hill above a river, twenty minutes inland and eight hundred years old

Paderne is one of the seven castles on the Portuguese flag, which is the sort of fact that sounds invented and isn't. What is left is a ring of rammed-earth wall on a spur above the Quarteira river — no roof, no ticket office, no gift shop, and on most days nobody else. It was Moorish before it was Portuguese, taken in the thirteenth century, and it has been quietly falling down ever since.
It matters because it is the opposite of the coast. Twenty minutes inland the resort stops, the road turns to dirt, and you are looking at the Barrocal: limestone, carob trees, dry-stone walls and a valley that has been farmed for a thousand years.
- Parking
- Free, and that is unusual enough to say twice. There is a car park at the castle end of the track and another down in Paderne village. The last two kilometres are unsurfaced — graded and easy after the council has been round, rutted and slow after heavy rain.
- Getting there on foot
- A short walk from the car park up to the walls, on rough ground with no handrail. Sensible shoes rather than sandals. There is no lift, no boardwalk and no smooth path, and that is unlikely ever to change.
- What's there
- None at the castle. No toilets, no cafe, no water, no shade and no shop. Paderne village has all of it and is a few minutes back down the road — the tour stops there for exactly that reason.
- Swimming
- No. The river below is shallow and slow and is not a swimming spot, whatever the weather is doing. If you want water on this run, that is what Alte is for.
- Shade
- Essentially none. A few carob and olive trees on the approach and nothing at all inside the walls. Hat, water, and do not plan on lingering at two in the afternoon in summer.
- With children
- Good for anyone old enough to enjoy a ruin they can walk around freely, which is most children over about five. Not fenced, uneven underfoot, and there are drops — worth holding a small hand rather than assuming.
- Without a car
- Difficult. Buses reach Paderne village from Albufeira infrequently and stop well short of the castle, which leaves a long walk on an unsurfaced track with no pavement. This is a place people reach by car, by tour, or on the marked walking trail.
- When to go
- Late afternoon, when the light comes across the valley and the walls go orange. Out of season is better than in — it is exposed, and in August the middle of the day up there is punishing.
- How long to stay
- Half an hour at the castle itself. Add forty minutes each way if you walk down the river path to the old bridge, which is the part most people remember.
